Fire pits have long been a staple of outdoor camaraderie: Who doesn’t love cozy nights spent fireside while listening to spooky stories and roasting marshmallows? But there are many more ways to enjoy a fire pit than weeny roasts and smores. In fact, your fire pit can be optimized to facilitate a complete outdoor fine-dining experience if you follow the right steps.
If you’re looking to create an outdoor dining experience for your friends and family, follow this step-by-step guide below on how to build your very own DIY tandoori fire pit using one of our custom install tandoor ovens!
How to Build a Tandoori Fire Pit in 5 Easy Steps
Step 1 – Gather Your Materials
The first thing you’ll need to do when building a DIY tandoor fire pit is gather the necessary materials. These include:
- One custom install residential Hōmdoor
- One pointed shovel and one square shovel
- ¾ inch crushed stone
- Concrete-block adhesive
- Pre-cut, curved concrete blocks
- Wheelbarrow
- Hand tamper
- Rubber mallet
- Level
- Caulk gun
Step 2 – Dig the Hole
Take the tandoor oven and place it on the ground where you’d like to have your fire pit. Make sure that the location of your fire pit is at least two inches away from any combustible materials. Place the curved concrete blocks around the base of your tandoor to form a circle, then remove the tandoor from the center and place aside for later. Taking the square shovel, dig into the ground around an inch from the edge of your concrete blocks, carefully lifting the grass and placing onto a tarp to use for packing purposes at the end of the project.
Once the top layer of grass has been removed and set aside, use the pointed shovel to dig your hole. The hole should be fairly shallow since the goal is not to bury the tandoor underground, but rather provide a strong foundation for your DIY fire pit.
Step 3 – Lay the Packing
When the hole has been dug, take the ¾ inch crushed stone and pour it into the hole, evenly distributing the material so that the layer is approximately one inch thick. Using the hand tamper, pack the material tightly in place. Repeat these steps until there is approximately four inches of space between the top of the hole and the packing material.
Step 4 – Lay the Blocks
Once the packing materials has been laid, it’s time to form the foundation of your tandoori fire pit. Form the first layer of your foundation by laying the concrete blocks inside of the hole on top of the crushed stone. Continue building in layers, using the concrete-block adhesive and caulk gun to ensure each layer stays tightly together.
When the base has been sufficiently formed, take the grate for the Hōmdoor custom tandoor oven and place it in the center of the concrete foundation. Use your concrete blocks to form a wall around the grate, making sure you leave a hole in the front for a combustion air vent and ash removal purposes.
Step 5 – Insert Your Tandoor
After forming the wall around the grate, center the Hōmdoor oven over the grate and on top of the concrete block walls. Starting at the original base below the grate wall, construct a non-combustible exterior around the tandoor oven, making sure to leave an opening around the hole to preserve the air vent. Finish the construction of your custom tandoor fire pit with a fire-resistant, heat-resistant countertop.
Voila — now you’re ready to enjoy an outdoor dining experience that will have your friends and family looking forward to fireside evenings in a way they never imagined!
